(The topic title was a search term used to find an article at my friends’ blog. If you’re not going there, you’re missing out some great commentary about Univ. of Kentucky Basketball and Football. But I wanted to answer the question posed in the query here.)
Its funny how the ultimate fate of this Wildcat team was sealed so completely before January. I’m proud at the way our Wildcats have clawed their way back into the NCAA Tournament talk. Our turnaround has been amazing. But the team can make it phenomenal by getting into the Big Dance. It would be a fitting reward for the hard work they’ve put in all season long.
I have been informed that a shadowy network of ex-CIA spies have been following Coach Gillispie’s every move. They have sent me notes on what they have seen, which I have added to the map below. (Thanks Wayfairing for the application!) Each yellow pin you see below is a report from the spies. Double-click on the map to be taken to the main map; there you will be able to click on each yellow pin and read the details of each report.
The Jumbotron is a mixed blessing at Rupp. You usually have one hilarious moment or a few adorable kids per game, but most folks just turn towards the Jumbotron and pose and scream AT the screen instead of the camera. Its not their fault, since the cameras are normally in weird high-up locations and folks don’t get enough time to triangulate the location of the camera. But it looks bad — like somebody posing in the mirror after a shower.
Today at Rupp during the Tennessee Tech Victory, guess who gets on the Jumbotron? Yup, your humble columnist. In the spur of the moment, a chance to create that hilarious moment, what do I do?
Stared and posed at the Jumbotron screen. And I gave a super-goofy thumbs up. The camera couldn’t cut off of me quicker.
Students and fans, don’t wait around for UK Athletics to organize something like this. Because you know you’ll do just regular old UK logos and other benign stuff. Engineering students, get yourselves a Facebook group going and start collaborating!
This story was just too good to pass up even though the FireBilly.com staff is on it’s unannounced summer vacation of indeterminate length. What’s that Jai Lucas? You would like to de-commit? Uhm let me think. Hell no.
The battle between rival news organizations to be first to break a story is always a heated one. Sometimes they are even fun to watch. The point is, anytime they screw up it’s always a good time to point and laugh. Today, we had just such an occasion. Throughout Patrick Patterson’s entire recruitment he has been playing his cards close to the vest. No one could really get a good read on which school he would choose. That was until today at 3:08pm. That’s right, a full 37 minutes before he officially makes his decision WOWK-TV in Huntington breaks the story and announces that Patrick Patterson is headed to FLORIDA! See for yourself.
Only one problem with that. The press conference didn’t start until 3:45. So, one of a couple of things happened here. Either they had a source that said it was a “done deal” to Florida and they went with it or they just pre-wrote both stories and posted one of them. Here is the corrected version with a misspelled “Kentuckuy” in the first sentence.
Jai Lucas - Will announce his decision on Monday at 2:30. It’s about friggin’ time.
Patrick Patterson - Will announce his decision on Wednesday at 3:45. Dido.
Rivals.com - Yahoo! is rumored to be interested in buying the site for $100 million. WHAT? Million? As in sharks with frickin’ laser beams type money? Amazing.
“Here’s what I know of Chris: He’ll help us win,” said Gillispie, who was hired at Kentucky after three seasons at A&M.
Walker drove Gillispie and UK assistant Jeremy Cox to Huntington, W.V., for the high school’s banquet Monday night. Gillispie was the guest speaker, the paper reporter.
Well that didn’t take long. As I’m sure you have heard by now, UK is replacing the court in Memorial Coliseum. This is the original floor that Rupp actually built (so to speak). Wildcat Nation is in an uproar because instead of treating it like a state shrine and preserving it like it should be, they are tossing most of it into a dumpster. UK is keeping several specific sections of the floor though such as the lanes and other historic locations. If you didn’t have a chance to go dumpster diving, there is still hope yet for you to get your own piece of history.
You can buy a section off of eBay. This auction is currently at $31. I love the internet.
I’d like to say I’m sorry to everyone up front for writing this because I know no one wants to talk about the past (especially me) but the crushing weight of irony would kill me if I didn’t.
Barring a significant change, new Gophers men’s basketball coach Tubby Smith said he won’t add any more players to the team’s roster for next season.
Ouch. That has to be tough to swallow for Gopher fans if they heard any of the criticism Tubby received before he left town. Or if they’ve been blinded by the spotlight that Billy Clyde is shining while searching for recruits NATIONWIDE.
Those of you in the national media that are so quick to shout “those racists ran him out of town” should go read that article. Being complacent about recruiting is something the Big Blue Nation is no longer willing to accept. Go Billy Clyde Go.
[Edit by Hefty Lefty] Right after reading this post, I came across an article in the Courier Journal that talks about the $300,000 increase in UK’s recruiting budget. Rumors that the increase was to pay for Billy Clyde’s cell phone bill are completely unsubstantiated. One of these coaches is definitely not like the other.
